Hurricane Katrina’s been in the news lately, battering Louisiana and Florida and driving up the price of fuel. One of the consequences of Katrina has been its effects on airlines trying to stay above water:

The storm forced the closure of several airports and caused scores of flight cancellations throughout the Gulf Coast region Monday. It also caused a surge in oil prices, something the airlines have been battling for months with no end in sight.

The result could mean more pain for Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc., a major carrier to the area affected by the hurricane, as it continues to try to avoid a Chapter 11 filing. More broadly, the other airlines also could suffer. Like Delta, Eagan, Minnesota-based Northwest Airlines Corp. also is in danger of bankruptcy.

Check your frequent flyer miles and see what recourse you may have if either Northwest or Delta go under.

The majority of these airlines will credit you actual mileage or a minimum of 500 miles per coach ticket in the Delta Skymiles program. With first or business class tickets, you can get anywhere from 115% to 150% of the mileage versus a standard 150% of mileage on Delta flights.

Airlines frequent flyer miles are typically valued at around a penny per mile, so getting ten thousand frequent flyer miles is worth about a hundred bucks. It’s worth even more if you’re close to getting a free frequent flyer ticket and you really want to take that trip on the airline’s tab. That’s when a frequent flyer mileage card comes in incredibly handy. If you sign up for a Continental Airlines World MasterCard® from Chase, you get will get ten thousand OnePass miles at the cost of a $85 annual fee. Plus, you earn a mile for reach dollar you spend, so it’s basically 1% back.

These deals are great when you’re very close to getting a free ticket or when your miles are close to expiring. The annual fee would be high if you weren’t getting ten thousand free miles but you’re actually making $15 worth of free miles. Plus, if you’re eleven thousand miles away from a free flight… you just spend a thousand dollars on the card after you get it and you can fly for free.

They’re critical in any trip planning strategy. Usually a flight from a discount carrier across the country will run you around $300 (Southwest, if you book ahead of time) and if you look at some deluxe carriers like Continental, you’re talking $2000 for last minute arrangements.

Here’s some of the financial mumbo jumbo regarding the card:

Fixed 7.9% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 6 months

Double OnePass® Miles at Lowe’s® Home Improvement Warehouse, CVS/pharmacy®, AT&T, Hertz®, Macy’s, Bed Bath and Beyond®, KB Toys, U.S. Postal ServiceTM, Best Buy – and any bookstore.

Double OnePass® miles on the purchase price of Continental Airlines tickets purchased directly through Continental

Earn 10,000 OnePass® miles upon payment of the $85 annual fee

No pre-set spending limit*

Earn one OnePass® mile for every dollar you charge

Dine at any of the more than 7,500 participating restaurants and you’ll earn up to 10 OnePass® miles for every dollar you spend when you use your card

$85 Annual Fee
