When you rent a car, they typically will ask if you want collision coverage (called a collision damage waiver, but essentially is insurance with a $0 deductible) and usually the correct answer is NO. If you pay with a credit card, most of the time they offer collision coverage free of charge. If you have automobile insurance, then you will probably be covered. But in some small instances, you actually aren’t covered and should be getting it…

If you have auto insurance, then you will, required by law, have liability insurance to cover you if you hurt someone in an accident. Damage to the car would fall under comprehensive and collision insurance – which isn’t typically required by law.

With a credit card, if you charge the entire cost of the rental to the card, you will be covered (if your card offers it). Even if your card covers it, double check what agencies and what car classes are covered (you’re probably not covered for that Bentley you’re renting by the hour down in Miami!) – you may find yourself in a rough spot otherwise.

In any case, always double check because those fees can be around $15 and you may not even needs it. Its common knowledge that rental agencies make a killing off these insurance plans, don’t become another one of the suckers they fleece.

As competition increases, so do perks and conveniences and competition in the car rental business is as high as ever. CNNMoney had an article today with a list of all the popular perks that Alamo, Budget, Hertz, and Enterprise offer their rental customers. Hertz even offers a free tank of gas! Recently I rented a mini-van from Thrifty and found that it even has Sirius Satellite radio! Read on for a list of some of the great perks.

Alamo Rent A Car:

Alamo will now permit all customers to check in online and head straight to their designated car, bypassing the rental counter altogether — a perk normally reserved for the industry’s best customers.

Budget Rent A Car:

Budget, according to USA Today, is offering $2 off its daily rate to companies that rent five or more times a year.

Hertz:

Hertz, for instance, offers a free tank of gas and double airline frequent-flier miles for some rentals. Companies are installing more cars with satellite radio and navigation systems, USA Today said.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car:

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is running an online sweepstakes that promises to give away 29 trips to the Professional Bull Riders world championship in Las Vegas in November. Airfare, hotel and tickets are included.
